From a local contemporary art museum to a global cultural powerhouse

As the Fondation Cartier moves from the 14th district to a larger, more central venue, its digital ecosystem needed to evolve to match this new scale. AREA 17 partnered with the Fondation to create a flexible, future-ready website experience designed to increase visibility, deepen engagement, and support the institution as it enters its new stage.

Supporting a shift in scale and perception

The Fondation Cartier’s move to a larger space marked a shift from a respected contemporary art museum to a cultural institution with global reach. Working with DeValence, who created the new visual identity and custom typeface, we carried the Fondation’s aesthetic across every digital touchpoint.

As the Fondation’s scale and ambitions grow, so does the complexity of its digital ecosystem. Our response was deliberate simplicity: a streamlined navigation model supported by layered, context-rich content. This approach makes the breadth of the Fondation’s spaces, programs, and cultural initiatives fully legible: guiding visitors from a clear point of entry into deeper stories, connections, and experiences.

Crafting a world-class online visitor experience

The new building’s architecture and varied exhibition spaces created distinct challenges we needed to address digitally. By unifying digital and physical journeys, we ensured a seamless, engaging experience from the first point of contact through the entire visit. A web app enriches the on-site experience with practical, contextual information, while Vivenu integration streamlines ticketing, helping visitors plan ahead and reducing wait times.

A cultural hub reflecting the Fondation's unique approach

The Fondation Cartier’s approach to art is rooted in fluid, interdisciplinary experimentation and a commitment to making contemporary art accessible to all. We carried this mission online with dynamic storytelling tools that let the Fondation shape narratives across themes, artists, and artworks—dissolving traditional collection silos and inviting visitors to explore connections and discover new perspectives.

To echo the identity of each exhibition, we designed a system that assigns a unique color to every show, drawn directly from the Fondation’s posters and promotional materials—creating a cohesive bridge between digital and physical worlds. The website also becomes a cultural hub, gathering the Fondation’s lectures, performances, screenings, educational programs, and publications in an accessible, intuitive environment that supports its commitment to making contemporary art visible and open to the broadest possible audience.

Expanding global reach and international influence

As a cultural institution with a growing international presence, it was crucial for the new website to reflect the Fondation’s global influence. The platform is built to scale, enabling the Fondation to showcase partnerships with institutions around the world and promote travelling exhibitions. This ensures that its digital presence is as expansive and influential as the Fondation itself, connecting with audiences far beyond its physical walls.
