James Gillispie

Engineering Director

James Gillispie Cover

What drives James as an Engineering Director at AREA 17 is being the connective tissue between strategy, design, and technology. He cares deeply about the relationships that make that possible: long-term collaborations with colleagues, and client partnerships built on trust. He brings a steady hand, a curious mind, and a deep respect for the craft behind every part of a project.

James began his career in Brooklyn as a painter after earning his MFA in Painting from Yale. His work investigates how we see the world—both directly and through screens. His first role in tech was as Web Manager at Parsons School of Design. From there, he worked across agency and in-house roles at Def Jam Records, Athletics, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and Bellweather. Across his career, he has developed extensive experience helping translate brand vision into meaningful digital experiences, working with clients including The New Museum, Museum of the City of New York, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.

James stays grounded in his roots as a maker. Alongside his painting practice, he’s a photographer and fly fisherman. Outside his myriad hobbies, he spends time with his partner Sarah, their son Ben, and their 15-year-old miniature poodle, Franklin. His current obsession is making his 1840s Greek Revival farmhouse as energy efficient as possible—a fascinating project combining historical preservation with modern sustainability.
